ACCA

The ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification is designed to build accounting and finance professionals progressively—from fundamental knowledge to advanced strategic decision-making.

Unlike a qualification that focuses only on technical accounting, ACCA develops knowledge across accounting, taxation, audit, financial management, performance management and business strategy.

The ACCA qualification is broadly structured into three levels: Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills and Strategic Professional.

1. Applied Knowledge

The Applied Knowledge level is the starting point for students who want to develop a strong foundation in business and accounting.

It covers three subjects:

• Business and Technology (BT)
• Management Accounting (MA)
• Financial Accounting (FA)

This stage helps students understand how businesses operate, how financial information is prepared and how accounting supports business decisions.

It is particularly suitable for candidates who are new to accounting or are building their fundamental knowledge.

2. Applied Skills

The Applied Skills level moves from basic concepts to practical and technical finance capabilities.

The subjects include:

• Corporate and Business Law (LW)
• Performance Management (PM)
• Taxation (TX)
• Financial Reporting (FR)
• Audit and Assurance (AA)
• Financial Management (FM)

At this stage, students develop the ability to apply accounting and finance principles to realistic business situations.

The level is especially important for candidates targeting roles such as Financial Accountant, Management Accountant, Audit Associate, Tax Analyst and Finance Analyst.

3. Strategic Professional

The Strategic Professional level focuses on advanced technical knowledge, professional judgement and strategic thinking.

Candidates must complete two Essentials papers:

• Strategic Business Leader (SBL)
• Strategic Business Reporting (SBR)

They then choose two from four Options:

• Advanced Financial Management (AFM)
• Advanced Performance Management (APM)
• Advanced Taxation (ATX)
• Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA)

This level is designed to prepare candidates for more senior finance and leadership responsibilities where analysis, judgement and strategic decision-making become increasingly important.

What Happens After the ACCA Exams?

Passing the exams is only part of the journey toward ACCA membership. Candidates also need to complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module and meet ACCA's practical experience requirements.

This combination of examinations, ethics and practical experience helps develop professionals who can contribute beyond routine accounting and support wider business decisions.
