ACCA Course Structure: 3 Levels and 13 Papers Explained

For students planning their ACCA route: every level and paper code, what each paper covers, the rules on order and exam limits, and what each stage costs in rupees.

People call ACCA a "course," but it is really a set of 13 exams plus two things that are not exams. Once you see how the pieces fit, planning your next two years gets much easier. If you are new to the qualification, start with what ACCA actually is. Here is the whole map.

Key takeaways
  • ACCA is 13 exams across 3 levels: 3 Applied Knowledge, 6 Applied Skills and 4 Strategic Professional.
  • Applied Knowledge exams are on demand. Applied Skills and Strategic Professional run in March, June, September and December.
  • To become a member you also need the EPSM ethics module and 36 months of practical experience (PER).
  • ACCA’s own fees come to about ₹3 lakh with no exemptions, before coaching.

The 13 ACCA papers at a glance

LevelPapersWhat you sit
Applied Knowledge3BT, MA, FA
Applied Skills6LW, PM, TX, FR, AA, FM
Strategic Professional — Essentials2SBL, SBR (both compulsory)
Strategic Professional — Options2Pick 2 from AFM, APM, ATX, AAA

That is 13 exams. Nobody sits all 15 papers on the list — the Options level has four papers on offer and you choose two.

Level 1: Applied Knowledge (3 papers)

This is the foundation. Basic accounting, basic costing, how a business works.

CodeFull nameWhat it covers
BTBusiness and TechnologyHow organisations work, leadership, ethics, tech in business
MAManagement AccountingCosting, budgeting, variances, performance measurement
FAFinancial AccountingDouble entry, trial balance, final accounts, basic consolidation

The useful bit: these three are computer-based and available on demand, all year. You do not wait for an exam window. Book when you are ready. Each exam runs 2 hours. Most students clear this level in 3 to 6 months.

Level 2: Applied Skills (6 papers)

This is the longest stretch. It is where ACCA stops being a school subject and starts being a professional exam.

CodeFull nameWhat it covers
LWCorporate and Business LawContract, employment, company law, corporate fraud
PMPerformance ManagementAdvanced costing, decision-making, performance analysis
TXTaxationIncome tax, corporation tax, VAT (UK variant is the common choice)
FRFinancial ReportingIFRS standards, consolidated accounts, ratio analysis
AAAudit and AssuranceAudit planning, evidence, internal control, reporting
FMFinancial ManagementWorking capital, investment appraisal, cost of capital, risk

These are sat in exam windows — March, June, September and December. Each paper is 3 hours. Budget 12 to 18 months for the level.

Level 3: Strategic Professional (4 papers)

Two compulsory, two chosen.

Essentials — you must sit both

  • SBL — Strategic Business Leader. One long case study, no separate sections. The longest paper in the qualification at 4 hours.
  • SBR — Strategic Business Reporting. Advanced IFRS, group accounts, and explaining reporting decisions to non-accountants.

Options — choose any two

CodeFull nameWho usually picks it
AFMAdvanced Financial ManagementCorporate finance, treasury, investment banking targets
APMAdvanced Performance ManagementFP&A, business partnering, management consulting targets
ATXAdvanced TaxationTax practice roles — note this follows a country variant
AAAAdvanced Audit and AssuranceAudit and assurance careers, Big 4 audit tracks

In India, AFM and APM are the most common pair. AAA suits you if you are heading into audit. ATX only makes sense if you plan to work in the tax jurisdiction you sit it in.

Good to know:      You do not have to pick your two Options on day one. Many students decide after Applied Skills, once they know whether they enjoy audit, tax or finance work.

The two things that are not exams

Students forget these, then get stuck at the finish line.

  1. EPSM — Ethics and Professional Skills Module. An online module you complete yourself. Start it after Applied Knowledge and finish it before Strategic Professional. Cost: £83 (about ₹10,600 at ₹127.15 to £1 on 29 September 2026).
  2. PER — Practical Experience Requirement. 36 months of relevant work experience, signed off by a supervisor. Internships and articleship-style roles count if the work is relevant. You can build this while you study — most students do.

You are not an ACCA member until all three are done: 13 exams, EPSM, and 36 months of PER.

Rules that change how you plan

  • The levels are in order. You cannot sit an Applied Skills paper until Applied Knowledge is complete or exempted. Same rule between Skills and Strategic Professional.
  • Maximum 4 exams per session, 8 per calendar year. Even though there are four windows, you cannot sit 16 papers a year.
  • The seven-year rule. Once you pass your first Strategic Professional exam, you have 7 years to pass the rest, or those passes expire. Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills passes never expire.
  • Order within a level is flexible. Inside Applied Skills you can sit the six papers in any order you like.
Good to know:      The seven-year clock starts with your first Strategic Professional pass. Plan all four papers before you sit the first one.

What each level costs

ACCA fees are set in pounds. Figures below are ACCA's standard-entry rates for students in India, converted at £1 = ₹127.15 (29 September 2026). The pound moves, so always check the date on any rupee figure.

ItemGBP≈ INR
One-time registration£89₹11,300
Annual subscription (each year)£140₹17,800
Applied Skills exam (per paper)£151₹19,200
SBL exam£268₹34,100
SBR / each Option exam£191₹24,300
EPSM£83₹10,600

With no exemptions, ACCA's own fees for the whole qualification come to about ₹3 lakh, before coaching.

Two things to watch. Applied Knowledge exam fees are set by the computer-based exam centre, not by the central price list — ask your centre for the exact figure. And book on time: late entry costs considerably more than standard entry. For December 2026, standard entry closes 2 November 2026 and late entry closes 9 November 2026.

How long does the whole thing take?

If you start after 12th with no exemptions and never miss a window, the exams take about 2.5 to 3 years — 3 to 6 months for Applied Knowledge, 12 to 18 months for Applied Skills, and 8 to 12 months for Strategic Professional. In practice most students finish in 3 to 4 years, because skipped sessions add up. Nothing moves the timeline as much as simply not missing a window.
